Great Bear Lodge Videos
Cougar -- Ghost of the Rain forest: Though cougars are relatively common here, they are extremely difficult to see
due to their nocturnal habits and elusive behavior, which is why they are nicknamed "ghost of the rain forest." People have seen their tracks right behind the
lodge during winter. This video is Black & White due to the low light during
this remote encounter with this female.
Otters Playing on the Dock Covered in Snow: River otters regularly visit the lodge, one of their favorite areas to be around,
throughout the year. During the winter when the lodge is quiet, they seem to take
over the place, and when it comes to snow on the docks they roll around everywhere, and enjoy themselves.
Coastal Grey Wolf Approaches Photographer: This male wolf from the local pack was sometimes seen resting in the sunny
cove north of the lodge during cold winter mornings. This clip shows him
cautiously approaching the photographer who is hiding behind her tripod. With each step he takes toward the photographer, he still doesn't recognize that usual shape.
Black Bear Scent Marks a Tree: A male black bear scent marks two trees along a bear trail during the breeding
season.
Grizzly Bear Rubs in a Wallow: Grizzlies often use “wallows” during the spring and early summer of the breeding season,
most likely as a form of scent marking. The wallows appear as basically a mud hole
to us, but for the bears they are much more. Here is a young male vigorously rubbing his
head in the mud. Several male bears used this
wallow last year.
